According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Leeds now want to sign Newcastle target Joaquin Correa, who Arsenal pursued in 2021.
What’s the story?
Well, it was said that Mikel Arteta submitted a £17m bid to sign the Argentina international back in June 2021, although the South American eventually joined Inter Milan in a €25m (£21m) deal.
However, things didn’t go very well for Correa at the San Siro, as he scored just six goals in 36 appearances last season.
Now, Leeds could offer him an escape route, while Newcastle have also shortlisted the 27-year-old.
Gazzetta dello Sport believe Leeds are eyeing a move for Correa as a replacement for Raphinha in attack, and Inter Milan are happy to sell their No.11 this summer.
However, they do not want to make a loss on their £21m investment, so a sum of £22m is being demanded.
The Italian news outlet add that Inter Milan expect Paulo Dybala to arrive at the San Siro, so they need to make space in their frontline.
Edin Dzeko – a target for Everton and Wolves – could also be offloaded.
Arsenal could pose threat to Leeds & Newcastle
In our view, Arsenal could easily reignite their interest in the Argentine.
Despite the signing of Gabriel Jesus, it seems Arteta is still on the lookout for another forward.
The Spaniard was hoping to sign Raphinha before the Brazilian joined Barcelona, and there has also been talk of a move for Serge Gnabry.
Therefore, Jesse Marsch and Eddie Howe should be worried, as £22m is an attractive price for the Gunners to spend on a player they have presumably done their homework on.
As of now, there have been no fresh links to Correa from Arsenal, but if Leeds and Newcastle twiddle their thumbs and hesitate, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the north Londoners gatecrash the party.
