The Mail claim that an Everton deal for Jesse Lingard hinges on whether Newcastle or Tottenham complete a move for £25million-rated playmaker Anthony Gordon – though Everton are keen to keep their academy product.
Gordon, 21, clocked up 40 appearances in all competitions for the Toffees last season. He was a crucial part in Frank Lampard’s side. Eventually securing survival, Gordon was praised by many – branded “fearless” by Alan Shearer.

The latest reports claim that Everton have informed Tottenham to cool their interest in Gordon. Meanwhile Newcastle are planning a £25million move. However, the Mail say that they are planning to extend Gordon’s contract.
Towards the end of the report, The Mail say that a move for free agent Jesse Lingard – who has also been linked with Newcastle and Tottenham – depends on whether Gordon remains at Goodison Park. It looks likely he will.
Lingard deal hinges on Newcastle or Tottenham move for Gordon
Financially, cashing in on Gordon and bringing in Lingard on a free transfer makes sense. It might be tempting for Everton given their issues with Financial Fairplay. But of course, they have just sold Richarlison for £60million.
From a footballing point of view, keeping Gordon – an Everton player through and through – over a 29-year-old Lingard is what the fans will prefer. It looks then, as if Everton will miss out on Lingard, but end up keeping Gordon.
