Rangers were reluctant to pay up for West Ham United target Terem Moffi in 2020 – and they may just live to regret that decision.

The Gers have had a few transfer misses in recent times.

Recently, we spoke about the failed move to sign Dutch midfielder Joey Veerman, who joined PSV Eindhoven instead.

Manchester United now have Veerman on their radar with Erik ten Hag keeping close tabs on a midfielder Rangers could have signed.

Then there is defender Danilho Doekhi, who seemed to be edging towards Rangers as his Vitesse contract expired at the end of last season.

Doekhi joined Union Berlin instead and Fabrizio Romano claims that English teams already want to sign him after a fine Bundesliga campaign.

These are agonising misses for Rangers, both in terms of quality on the pitch and sell-on value in the transfer market – and another is emerging.

Rangers missed out on Terem Moffi deal

Back in 2020, Het Laatste Nieuws in Belgium reported that Rangers were chasing Terem Moffi, who was then in action for Kortrijk.

Rangers were quoted around €5million (£4.5million), which they were unwilling to pay given that Moffi had cost Kortrijk a fraction of that price just months earlier.

Lorient did pay up for Moffi though and their gamble has been repaid.

Moffi has now smashed 34 goals in 87 games for Lorient in France’s top flight, enjoying a meteoric rise having been playing in Lithuania as recently as 2019.

The Nigerian attacker is now one of France’s top goalscorers and European football expert Kevin Hatchard called him ‘a nightmare for defenders’.

Lorient are now demanding £25million for Moffi, a deal West Ham United have been considering this month.

That would be more than £20million in profit before sell-on clauses, giving Lorient a huge influx of cash.

It looks like Rangers – who really need a consistent, promising goalscorer with Alfredo Morelos potentially moving on – have really missed the boat on Moffi.

Doekhi, Veerman and Moffi could have absolutely transformed Rangers and instead, they look set to rake in major profit for their clubs elsewhere.

Rangers can’t afford many more of these misses and Ross Wilson needs to find more talents like Moffi quickly – and pull the trigger on signing them this time.
