Rangers B head coach David McCallum has praised his side for their performance in yesterday’s 2-1 win over Clyde – picking out Robbie Ure and Kelsey Ewen for particular praise for their role in the victory.
Ure scored the winner for the Light Blues at Broadwood after Aaron Lyall had pulled the Gers level shortly after the restart, having gone 1-0 down early on.
Ewen was singled out for his role in keeping former Scotland international David Goodwillie fairly quiet as the young Rangers B side picked up an impressive win against League One opposition.
McCallum was impressed with the performance against such a high level of opposition, as he admits to facing a balancing act trying to get minutes into his players ahead of next weekend’s Lowland League opener against Bo’ness United.
“We spoke before the game that as much as we talk about a football challenge it is probably a mental challenge as well because it is a step up and Clyde have had a good pre-season,” McCallum told Rangers TV.
“It is always a target to try and get as many players minutes before the season starts, we know that the balance of the squad is what it is and it is about trying to make sure that we use them appropriately so I think it was good minutes on the pitch.
“It was pleasing to see Robbie Ure, an under-18 scoring today as well and Kelsey Ewen going in at centre-back playing against David Goodwillie so there were good individual challenges on the pitch as much as it was a team challenge as well.”
Win over Clyde an impressive result for Rangers B
With Clyde’s competitive fixtures getting underway this week, they are putting the final touches to their preparations so the win by a young Rangers side is an impressive result.
While the Lowland League clash with Bo’ness United next weekend should be an easier test in theory, there will be far more at stake for the Rangers B team.
Before that though, there’s one more pre-season friendly for Rangers B – Burnely under-21s at Auchenhowie in midweek.
