Arsenal announced some good news this morning.

With Mohamed Elneny looking set to leave the Gunners during the summer, the North London revealed that the Egypt international had in fact signed a new contract.

Elneny’s previous deal was due to expire in a few weeks but the former Basel midfielder has reminded everybody what a big player he is these past few months, with hints about a new deal in recent days.

With Thomas Partey sidelined with injury, the 29-year-old came back into Mikel Arteta’s starting XI regularly and inspired Arsenal to some massive victories between April and now, beating Chelsea and Manchester United to name but a few.

Here’s how the player himself reacted to the announcement on Instagram today.

Aaron Ramsdale is one of the key influencers in the Arsenal dressing room when it comes to banter and vibes.

And the former Sheffield United goalkeeper continued to confuse the Gunners’ faithful by simply writing ‘Brian‘ and a loveheart emoji in response to Elneny’s post.

It would appear to be a private joke between Ramsdale and his Arsenal teammate, given that this isn’t the first time he has referred to Mohamed Elneny as ‘Brian’.

Contract makes sense

Positive Arsenal news is rare to come by at the moment.

Remember, Arteta’s side contrived to shoot themselves in the foot and fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, even when it looked completely in their hands.

But Elneny’s new contract is definitely positive.

Arsenal are back in the Europa League now and that’s a competition where the Spanish manager is likely to rotate a lot of his best players every second Thursday for the first half of the campaign at least.

And Elneny – lauded by Ian Wright earlier this month – is certainly somebody valuable to have in this competition and, as proven this season, he is also good enough to cover Partey or Granit Xhaka in the Premier League.

There’s no real downside to this for the Gunners, it has to be said.
