Peterborough United chairman Darren MacAnthony has said that Leeds United new-boy Weston McKennie is not good enough to play in the Premier League.

The popular opinion remains that the £49,000-a-week midfielder is a ‘very good signing’, coming straight from Juventus to the Whites, albeit on a loan deal until the end of the season. The ‘superstar’ showed his brilliant understanding on the pitch at the World Cup alongside USA teammate Tyler Adams, as well as exhibiting his class in the Champions League.

But it seems as if Peterborough chairman Darren MacAnthony does not seem to think Weston McKennie can cut out in the Premier League as a whole, let alone in a struggling Leeds side.

Peterborough chairman does not think McKennie is a Premier League-level player

Before Jesse Marsch’s sacking, he himself spoke extremely highly about the 24-year-old, complimenting his quality as well as his ‘hunger’ and how ‘aggressive’ he was on the pitch.

However, Peterborough chairman Darren MacAnthony is not sold by the hype around the ‘outstanding’ Weston McKennie to the extent where he has said that he is not a player fit to play in the Premier League.

“No, not from what I saw at the World Cup, I don’t [think Weston McKennie is Premier League-quality]. But listen, I’ve been proven wrong”, the Peterborough United chairman said on The Hard Truth- Inside The Football Industry.

“A lot of the Americans have gone to Germany and done really well. I like the other guy Leeds have more, [Brenden] Aaronson, I actually like him. I love the midfielder, Tyle Adams, I really like him.”

Outrageous take to say the least

Look, one can question whether Weston McKennie may struggle to adapt to the Premier League, especially in a bang average Leeds side but to doubt his quality to play in the division in general is a stretch from the Peterborough chairman.

Especially going by MacAnthony being unimpressed by McKennie’s performances at the World Cup makes this all the more a baffling opinion.
