It has been reported that Juventus are demanding Leeds to fork out a £30.7 million fee to sign Weston McKennie in January, after the English club offered to sign him in a deal worth £24.5 million.
It’s easy to forget that Jesse Marsch’s side went big in the winter market, first spending as much as £35.5 million (Sky Sports), which is a club-record fee to secure the services of Georginio Rutter.
Before the addition of the former Hoffenheim striker, the Whites also paid £11 million to land Maximilian Wober (Sky Sports).
As a result, it makes complete sense why Leeds refuse to spend as much as £30.7 million to sign McKennie in January.
The report also claims that the Premier League side are ‘convinced’ that they do not have to pay over the odds for the 24-year-old, described by Marsch as ‘outstanding’ (via the Athletic) as they do not think they have a lot of competitors for his signature.
Furthermore, Leeds believe that they have the player’s ‘approval.’
Leeds should stick to their guns
Leeds United are completely in the right in this instance, as the club should not bow to Juventus’ request and pay £30.7 million to land Weston McKennie in January.
For a player of the box-to-box midfielder’s calibre, coupled with the fact that his deal expires in 2025, the initial £24.5 million offer on the table is fair.
The last thing any club, including Leeds should do is to accept any selling team’s request, as this could make them an easy target in future transfer negotiations.
