Paul Merson says Arsenal’s deadline day transfer move for Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is ‘outstanding’, as he told Sky Sports News (31/01/23).

The former Arsenal midfielder added that Jorginho is going to be a ‘top signing’ for Mikel Arteta’s side, after the Premier League leaders missed out on Moises Caicedo.

It perhaps came as a surprise to fans because the 31-year-old wouldn’t have been anywhere near their wishlist of midfielders they need or wanted this month.

Jorginho was a key figure behind Chelsea winning the European Cup under Thomas Tuchel, as well as Euro 2020 glory with Italy.

So, from that perspective, he has credit in the bank and a proven record to win the very big and best trophies.

Well, if Edu and Co get this deal over the line, then Merson is certainly backing it to work, as he explained why.

“I think outstanding,” said Merson. “You are buying experience as well. He’s won big trophies. He is a proper holding midfield player.

“We were only talking about, two years ago when they won the Champions League and he won the Euros, we were saying ‘why don’t England produce one of these players?’. Two years on and Arsenal could be getting him.

“I know he’s two years older, but he’s so intelligent. He’ll protect the back four and he just keeps it simple. He will be feeding Odegaard. He will be feeding Saka and Martinelli.

“For me, he is a top signing. He knows he won’t be playing every week. But he will bring experience and calmness. I call it a cup of tea.”

ARSENAL PLAYERS BACKING JORGINHO MOVE

Whilst Arsenal fans have mixed feelings on this signing because it’s not a Moises Caicedo, the feeling from inside the Emirates is very different.

At the end of the day, the people that matter most are Arteta and his players, well, it’s been reported that this Jorginho deal has been met with excitement inside the club.

Throughout his time in the dugout, many questions have been raised about Arteta, but he has always answered them, so perhaps these doubts will decrease because the words ‘trust the process’ are now bearing fruit.
