Tottenham Hotspur finally have a new manager having confirmed the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo on Wednesday; could Maxi Gomez follow?
It’s taken a long time – more than two months to be exact – to replace Jose Mourinho, but his former goalkeeper Nuno is now in the job.
Fabio Paratici will now have to bolster his squad ahead of the new Premier League season, but Nuno may have a signing of his own in mind.
Nuno’s interest in Maxi Gomez
The man in question here is Maxi Gomez, the Uruguayan striker who currently plays for Valencia.
A report from AS in June suggested that Nuno had already decided that he would want to sign Gomez no matter which club he ended up joining.
At the time, it looked like Everton or Crystal Palace, and Valencia were seemingly just waiting for Nuno to land a job.
Nuno allegedly wanted Gomez at Wolves, and Jorge Mendes – who represents Nuno and has strong ties to Tottenham now – has held real power at Valencia.
Gomez does have a £120million release clause in his Valencia deal, but the Spanish side need money, meaning a cut-price deal could be in the offing.
It’s therefore realistic to assume that Mendes can broker a deal for Nuno to finally get the striker he’s wanted, with Tottenham potentially more appealing than Everton or Palace anyway.

Would Gomez be a good signing for Tottenham?
Tottenham did actually chase Gomez in 2019, holding talks with his agent before he ended up joining Valencia instead.
The 24-year-old hit 30 goals in 75 games at Celta Vigo, but has only managed 18 goals in 74 outings for Valencia.
That should be of concern, but if Tottenham can keep hold of Harry Kane, they would only need Gomez to effectively serve as cover and competition.
Gomez is big and burly, seemingly built for the Premier League. He is a more refined player than Carlos Vinicius, and he has clearly caught Nuno’s eye.
With the Portuguese boss now on board, don’t be surprised to see Gomez end up at Tottenham this summer given Nuno’s alleged stance on him.
