‘On that level’: Merson says PL star that wants to join Tottenham like de Bruyne

Paul Merson has claimed that Tottenham transfer target, Christian Eriksen, is on Kevin de Bruyne’s level.

The TV pundit added that Eriksen is his ‘favourite player’ and an ‘unbelievable’ player that could play for Manchester City tomorrow.

The former Tottenham star made a return to football in January, following his collapse at Euro 2020, with Thomas Frank, his old youth coach, signing him up for the Bees.

The 30-year-old changed the tide for the London club by helping them secure their survival weeks before the season finished, even though they were on a bit of a slippery slope when he first arrived.

With Eriksen’s short-term deal set to come to an end, Merson discussed on Sky Sports News where he could go, as he raved about the player’s talents. 

“He’s my favourite player, at the moment,” said Merson. “I think the lad is unbelievable. I didn’t realise he was that good.

“His performance last week, his passing, his brain and his vision. I don’t care what anyone says, it was Kevin de Bruyne’s. 

“We talk about de Bruyne. Eriksen is on that level, in my opinion. Not that he is going to burst forward. But if you want a passer, he could play for Manchester City tomorrow. He is top, top draw.

“Would he stay (at Brentford)? I would like him to stay at Brentford for the next six months, until Christmas, just to get them solid for next season. It’s going to be hard for them next season. Then let him go in January when they are solid.” 

TOTTENHAM INTERESTED IN ERIKSEN

Tottenham have returned to Champions League football, so when they fish the market for the big talents, it will be a lot easier than what Arsenal will have to go through.

In truth, Spurs haven’t replaced Eriksen in north London, well, since they sold the player to Inter Milan in 2020.

Ironically enough, it was Antonio Conte who brought him to Italy back then and now he wants a re-union with the quick-thinking playmaker. 

If a deal were to happen, then there is no doubt Eriksen would be welcomed back with open arms because he is what Spurs need in the middle of the park.
