Rangers have completed the signing of defender Ben Davies from Liverpool for a fee of £4million as Calvin Bassey’s replacement – and Oli McBurnie has responded with a five-word post on his Instagram page.

Davies, 26, joins Rangers on a four-year deal after failing to make a single appearance for Liverpool since joining the club in January 2021. A surprise move at the time, in the midst of a centre-back crisis at Anfield.

But during the 2021-22 season, he played alongside McBurnie at Sheffield United on loan. He was a part of a Blades side that got into the Championship play-offs, only to fall at the semi-final stage.

He now moves north of the border to Rangers – after being previously linked with Celtic. It comes after Bassey joined Ajax in a deal the Dutch giants confirmed was worth an initial £19.5million, rising to £22.5million with add-ons.

A fee, that is a club-record sale for the Rangers – eclipsing the previous record in Nathan Patterson’s move to Everton. Well-known Rangers fan McBurnie reacted to Davies signing for Rangers, posting a five-word response on Instagram.

McBurnie has responded: Rangers have completed Davies signing

Now, is he as good as Bassey? No. Is he anything like Bassey? No. But Davies certainly provides Rangers with a left-footed centre-back that at £4million, is excellent value for money. Experienced, too.

Indeed, Davies has clocked up 271 club appearances already – 145 of which came at Preston. Excellent in the air, brilliant on the ball and despite his height, Davies has been used on the left side of the defence at times.

So, while he is not the level of Bassey, he is not far off. A brilliant signing, even if Davies is second choice to John Souttar to begin with, alongside Connor Goldson. What next, for the likes of Filip Helander and Niko Katic?
