Ajax have confirmed just how much they are paying Rangers to lure Calvin Bassey away from Ajax – with a post on their official website. The statement confirms Rangers are receiving a record fee, more than Nathan Patterson’s exit.
Patterson joined Everton in January for a fee totalling £16million – but Bassey’s far eclipses that figure. Italy-born Bassey, 22, sparkled during the 2021-22 campaign – clocking up 50 games as Rangers reached the Europa League final.

Bassey, who will wear the no.33 shirt at Ajax, has signed a five-year contract with the Dutch champions. He replaces Lisandro Martinez, with the Argentina international joining Manchester United this summer.
Ajax have posted a statement on their website, and confirm the fee they are paying. It is an initial £19.5million that will be sent directly to the Ibrox coffers – and with the potential of £3million more in performance-related add-ons.

It is an enormous fee – but one that Rangers deserve for Bassey. While he is playing for a Scottish club, which can ultimately reduce the value given the standard of the league – it is his European performances that rake in the cash.
His age helps, but defender’s are rarely as expensive as attackers. However, the top-five most-expensive sales from Rangers are all defenders – Bassey, Patterson, boss Gio van Bronckhorst, Alan Hutton and Jean-Alain Boumsong.
It now gives Rangers the chance to go and spend big on other areas of the squad. Especially, given they have already replaced Bassey for just £4million, in the form of Liverpool defender Ben Davies.
