Mel Eves wrote in his column for the Sunday Mercury back in July that Wolverhampton Wanderers need a top striker to challenge for promotion.

He said that Wolves have assembled a good squad under Nuno Santo. And adding a proven goal-scorer to this team will make them a top side.

Three months forward, Wolves are sitting top of the Championship table, two points ahead of Cardiff City after 12 games. But, Nuno must know that they have a long way to go.

Wolves could be looking to sign a striker in January, and the club should make an effort to land Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle.

Liverpool striker Danny Ings would have been a better choice, but he reportedly does not want to play in the Championship at the moment.

Gayle has made a poor start to the season at Newcastle. He is yet to score a Premier League goal for the Magpies, and there are question marks over his fitness.

However, the 27-year-old is a natural finisher and was Newcastle’s top scorer on their way to promotion (23 goals in 36 games). So, his experience and quality would come in handy for Wolves.

According to Daily Star, Newcastle are said to be considering selling Gayle. His stock may have fallen, and therefore he could be available at a reasonable price.

If Wolves can keep the title push going till January, Gayle could see them as an ideal club to join – not only to resurrect his career, but also to get a chance to play in the Premier League again.

Nevertheless, given his injury record, Gayle would be a big gamble signing, but he is a gamble worth taking.
