Newcastle have joined the race to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus despite strong interest from Arsenal. Newcastle fans should be excited, and even more so after what Alan Shearer said about Jesus back in 2018.

Jesus, 25, has been another crucial part of City’s side this season – having a hand in 25 goals during 40 games. That is despite only starting 27 times and completing 90 minutes on just 15 occasions. His contract is due to expire.

The ex-Palmeiras striker is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract and this summer represents the last-decent chance City have to bring in some cash. Arsenal are plotting a move for the £35million-rated striker.

His agent also recently confirmed talks, to Fabrizio Romano. However, CM claim Newcastle also want to sign Jesus this summer. Commenting on the City ace four years ago, Toon legend Shearer was full of praise for Jesus.

I’m a big fan of his. I like the way he plays, his aggression. He’s got a lot to his game. He makes it difficult for defenders in between the centre-halves. Centre-halves hate that,” Shearer told MOTD, as per the Mail, in 2018.

Shearer a fan of Newcastle target Jesus: Arsenal on pole position

Arsenal still remain an attractive proposition for players this summer, despite the now-likely inability to finish in fourth place. A 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on Monday night ended any chance of Champions League.

Jesus is expected to leave and it is likely he will only want to join a club fighting in the Champions League. Arsenal failed in their bid to do it this season – and with a Thursday-Sunday schedule next term, it will be tough.

A move to Newcastle might tempt him. The size of the club, the ambition of the new owners, and possibility of being the face of a new project is hugely tempting. Arsenal will be favourites, but Newcastle move is not a bad one.
