Everton winger Aaron Lennon is likely to leave the Merseyside club in January with Burnley close to signing him.

According to reports from the Mirror (live blog; 19/01/2018 – 16:51 pm), Burnley are closing in on a deal for the Everton winger, and the Clarets are looking to sign him for a nominal fee.

The 30-year-old, who has a reported £55k-per-week wages contract at Goodison Park, is expected to drop down the pecking order at the club following the arrival of Theo Walcott.

Newcastle United were also in the race to sign Lennon, with ESPN reporting earlier this week that Rafael Benitez was targeting him to bolster his ranks in the wide attacking areas at St James’ Park.

The report claimed that the Spaniard is a keen admirer of the 21-capped England international, and sees him as the ideal addition to his squad.

However, Newcastle fans are relieved to see the transfer move fall through, judging by their reaction on Twitter. Many feel that the Magpies never really wanted him in the first place.
