Newcastle United and Tottenham have missed out on the signing of French midfielder Corentin Tolisso, with the former Bayern Munich star set to sign for Lyon this week.

According to RMC Sport, the 27-year-old is due to have a medical at the French club ahead of a return to his boyhood side, with Newcastle and Tottenham just some of the many Premier League teams set to miss out on the signing of Tolisso following his decision to move back to Lyon.

Arsenal and Liverpool were also reportedly interested in Tolisso as well as Manchester United, however, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion has opted to sign for Lyon following his release from Bayern after five years with the Bundesliga giants.

With a reported wage of £115,000-a-week, it makes sense why Bayern were open to releasing Tolisso at the end of his contract last season, with the midfielder a regular on the treatment table and having very few bright moments with the German side in his stint with the club.

Despite being labelled as a ‘dangerous’ player, Tolisso will sign for Lyon with his reputation on the line as the midfielder aims to return to the form that made the former Ligue 1 star such a desired talent, much to the dismay of Premier League clubs.

Indeed, whilst the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham have missed out on Tolisso, there’s no denying that the midfielder has made the right choice signing for Lyon over an English side, with the French club the perfect environment for the 27-year-old to return to his best.

Signing for Lyon is exactly what Tolisso needed this summer

Tolisso once had the potential to become one of the best midfielders in Europe, yet like many non-German players who move to Bayern, this hope quickly faded away as the Frenchman became just another failed project with many trophies to decorate his CV, which is why this return to Lyon is so exciting.

The midfielder moves to his boyhood club at the peak of his powers, and with Lyon also re-signing Alexandre Lacazette, the French giants have the potential to do something special next season if Tolisso can find his form again.
