Jalen Brunson has all of New York at his feet, and now even the city’s planning officials are getting in on the act.
The New York Knicks ended a championship wait stretching back to 1973 with their Finals win over the San Antonio Spurs, and Brunson — the point guard who carried them there — has become the most celebrated man across the five boroughs.
Fans have been demanding something permanent to mark it, with a statue the favorite suggestion. The NYC Planning Commission, it seems, had grander plans in mind — or wanted everyone to think so for a few seconds.
The Jalen Brunson Special District — for about five seconds
Posting on X, the official NYC Planning account opened Tuesday’s update with a line built to make Knicks fans do a double take. “Today at the City Planning Commission: Zoning text amendment to establish the Jalen Brunson Special District in Midtown.”
The punchline was the map. The proposed district’s outline bore a striking resemblance to the Larry O’Brien Trophy — the very prize the Knicks had just lifted.
Then came the wink. “But actually…” the post continued, revealing the real agenda item: a SEQRA-exempt housing project set to bring more than 140 homes to the area, 40 of them income-restricted, with reforms designed to get people housed faster.
So no, Midtown is not being rebranded for Brunson. But whoever runs that account is plainly a Knicks fan still riding the high — and happy to dress up the city’s housing reforms with a basketball gag.
The statue calls, though, are no joke
The bit lands because the sentiment behind it is real. New Yorkers genuinely want a lasting tribute, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani has been asked for a statue.
Mamdani stopped short of committing. He said: “I can’t make that promise. I can’t promise.”
He left no doubt about the admiration, though. Mamdani added: “Just look at this man. I feel like I’m dreaming. God bless Jalen Brunson, King of New York.”
The mayor has since confirmed all players will receive Keys to the City. It’s a handsome honor — but for a fan base that waited more than half a century and has finally found its guy, a set of keys might not quite cut it.
