The New York Knicks’ title win has brought the city together, and Jalen Brunson is right at the center of it all.

After finally delivering an NBA championship against the San Antonio Spurs, Brunson has become more than just the Knicks’ superstar. He is now the face of a moment New York waited generations to see.

That has naturally led to fans calling for something permanent to honor him. With Brunson inspiring the Knicks to the title and turning himself into the city’s defining sports figure, NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked whether a statue should be built in his honor.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani on whether Jalen Brunson should get a statue

Speaking during a New Yorker Live appearance, Mamdani was asked about the growing calls for Brunson to get a statue in New York.

He was not ready to go that far.

“I can’t make that promise,” Mamdani said. “I can’t promise.”

Still, that was not exactly a rejection of Brunson’s status in the city.

Mamdani then made it clear just how highly he views the Knicks star, even placing Brunson above himself in terms of importance to New York right now.

“Just look at this man,” Mamdani said. “I feel like I’m dreaming. God bless Jalen Brunson, King of New York.”

That line captures the mood across the city.

Brunson has become the symbol of the Knicks’ championship run, and Mamdani has been fully involved in the public emotion around it. He was previously seen celebrating with fans at a bar during New York’s wild Finals comeback, showing just how much the run gripped the city.

The mayor also spoke about what the Knicks’ title has done for New York beyond basketball.

“I think what’s beautiful is that oftentimes, in our City, that sense of unity comes together in a moment of tragedy,” Mamdani said. “It’s a beautiful thing that it’s coming in a moment of joy.”

That is why the statue question does not feel completely ridiculous, even if Mamdani could not promise anything on the spot.

Brunson has given New York a sports moment big enough to cut across boroughs, generations and politics. For once, the city is not coming together because of hardship, but because of celebration.

Mamdani has already confirmed where the official Knicks celebrations will take place, and all players are set to be given Keys to the City after ending the franchise’s title wait.

A statue may have to wait. But Brunson’s place in New York history already feels secure.
