Giovanni Carnevali has told Calciomercato.it that Sassuolo received enquiries for Gianluca Scamacca during the January transfer window but never sought to sell the Arsenal target.

The Neroverdi Chairman lists Serie A leaders Inter Milan among the clubs to make contact over a mid-season move. But Carnevali never felt a sense of danger that he would have to sell the striker enjoying a strong season.

Scamacca has stretched his pool of possible suitors after impressing upon his return to the Mapei Stadium last summer. The 23-year-old has struck nine goals over 23 Italian top-flight appearances so far this season, despite only starting 12 games.

Sassuolo sent Scamacca to Genoa on loan last term, during which he scored eight goals and offered two assists. He also only started 13 fixtures during the 2020/21 campaign whilst at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium. While six of his goals came during his final eight appearances.

Now hitting seven of his nine Neroverdi goals over his last 10 appearances has the forward on several radars around Europe. FC Inter News cited Arsenal, Newcastle United, Juventus and Inter Milan as Scamacca’s suitors as Sassuolo demanded €40m (£33m) for his transfer.

But Inter were only willing to bid €25m (£21m) in cash, and FC Inter News add will move this summer. Additionally, Arsenal contacted Scamacca’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, but the Sassuolo striker’s priority is to remain in the Serie A if he is to accept any future transfer.

Carnevali explains transfer ‘danger’ around Arsenal target Scamacca

Sassuolo Chairman Carnevali has now confirmed reception of surveys from Inter Milan and foreign sides for Arsenal transfer target Scamacca. But the Neroverdi chief never feared the forward – who made his senior Italy debut in September – or Davide Frattesi would leave.

“The danger of seeing them leave in January was never there because we did not intend to deprive ourselves of it,” Carnevali said. “There were various requests, Inter was one of those who moved first. But there are also interests from abroad.

“We are fortunate to have so many young people who are so appreciated. We will see if the most appropriate conditions arise for us to make these sales.”

Scamacca is under contract with Sassuolo until 2025 and will only fortify Carnevali’s resolve to sanctioning a transfer to Arsenal et al by maintaining his form over the coming months.
