Tottenham Hotspur fans were surprised when Ange Postecoglou threw Wilson Odobert straight into the line-up for the visit of Everton.
In this crazy world of transfers, rumours circulate left, right and centre about the future of players and where they are headed next.
But Tottenham’s transfer capture of Odobert was a surprise because there was very little noise around it following his move from relegated Burnley.
There was no doubt that the 19-year-old was going to feature against Everton, it’s just many thought it would be from the bench.
But Postecoglou chucked the youngster straight in for his debut and it’s fair to say that he didn’t disappoint.
Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Leicester on Monday night was frustrating for the team because they didn’t kill off their opponents in the first half.
But inside half an hour against an abject Everton side, the London club were two goals to the good, thanks to goals from the returning Yves Bissouma and captain Son-Heung min.
Odobert left the field just after the hour mark and then Tottenham further increased their lead through Son again and Cristian Romero headed in from a corner.
A delighted Michael Dawson was watching on and he was pleased with what he saw from his former side and he gave his verdict on Odobert.
The former centre-back was fairly positive about the rising French star, as he told Sky Sports News (24/08/24 at 5:25 pm).
Tottenham beat Everton 4-0
“Wilson Odobert coming in for his first start for Spurs since signing from Burnley,” said Dawson.
“Very, very positive. I think he will be really good. The way he drives, the way he attacks the full-backs, a good performance. He goes down the left-hand side, he drifts all the way across to Kulusevski. You talk about players making the right decisions. There were two or three times where he glides into the box and is he going to pull the trigger.
“The way Everton defended, they defended in a really low block, so everyone was behind the ball trying to counter-attack. He just laid it back into the box and Bissouma, who was back in the team, this strike from the edge of the box was fantastic.”

Tottenham’s forward line
Dominic Solanke’s injury meant that he missed the Everton match and Son played down the middle, with a total of five attacking players starting.
That’s not including Lucas Bergvall who came on from the bench, Richarlison, Timo Werner and, of course, the absent Solanke.

Postecoglou now has the depth he wants and it’s going to be interesting to see if he strengthens his squad further before next Friday’s deadline.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are Tottenham’s starting centre-backs, but you feel another new face is needed, with Radu Dragusin the only other centre-back option.
