Micah Richards has stated that Karim Benzema is a ‘top player’ after previously suggesting that the Real Madrid star is now ‘as good as’ Tottenham hitman, Harry Kane.

During the knockout stages of the Champions League, Richards admitted that he ‘wasn’t really sure’ of Benzema, before comparing him to Tottenham’s main striker.

Benzema has been one of the best players in the world this season and winning the Champions League final with Madrid in Paris was just further proof of that.

The French star has scored a total of 44 goals and supplied 15 assists in 46 games in all competitions for Madrid this term – winning LA Liga, the Nations League with his country and now the Champions League.

Former Manchester City right-back Richards was reminded of his previous comparisons between Benzema and Kane, as he now tried to backtrack on those claims, whilst speaking to CBS Sports on Paramount+ (28/05/22 at 7:05 pm).

Host Kate Abdo reminded Richards: “I think we should give people context, just in case they missed this.

“Micah Richards gave us some insight into Karim Benzema, round of 16 2022, he said ‘before then weren’t really sure, but now he’s really convinced me that he’s as good as Harry Kane’.”

Richards responded: “No, no, no. You are mixing up my words here, Kate. He was in Ronaldo’s shadow before.

“Now he has come out of it and he is shining. And yes, top player. Top, top player.”

KANE CAN NOW PROVE HIS WORTH AT THE ELITE LEVEL

Kane is a top striker, that’s obvious for all to see, but at the end of the day, he hasn’t played in the Champions League for a number of years.

So, from that perspective, it’s hard to argue that he is ahead of the likes of Erling Haaland and Benzema.

Now, he’s certainly not ahead of Madrid’s thriving striker, but it’s going to be a great battle between Kane and Haaland next season in the Premier League.

The Leeds-born player will be donning Manchester City colours and he will be battling with Kane for the Golden Boot award.

Added with that, Haaland will want to add to the 23 goals he has scored from 20 Champions League matches – Kane has 20 goals from his 27 Champions League games.
