LeBron James’ free agency decision took a fascinating twist last week when the Miami Heat made an unfortunate mistake.
The Heat’s social media team scheduled an introductory press conference for LeBron before he had even decided his next team.
Even though the post was quickly deleted, millions of basketball fans then immediately considered James’ return a done deal.
However, the 41-year-old has since signed for the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Golden State Warriors were his second option.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne has now explained the story behind the Heat’s blunder that led many to believe James was returning.

The Heat’s scheduled press conference was simply a mistake and was not intended to tease LeBron’s return.
The staffer had “scheduled vacation for the week and was trying to get ahead of work” in case James joined the Heat.
They had absolutely no knowledge of James’ interest in moving to Miami, as many assumed following the incident.
However, no one can blame fans for being misled when president Pat Riley discussed James’ return around the same time.
Meanwhile, Rich Paul has revealed that he expected Miami to be “the spot” for James before eventually choosing Philadelphia.
“It’s one of those things where you have already been somewhere and you’ve been so successful there, why erase it, going back there?” Paul said.
“You’re never going to be able to duplicate or trump what you’ve already done.”
The Heat must be upset that LeBron has joined an Eastern Conference rival, but they should be pleased with their own business.
Trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo has ensured that they will remain relevant when the 2027 Playoffs arrive next April.
