Mexico were one of the three hosts of the 2026 World Cup, and just like Canada and the United States, they have exited the competition before the quarter-finals.

They met England in a Round of 16 tie, which Mexico likely fancied their chances of winning, given their usually impressive record on home soil.

When all was said and done, though, the Three Lions secured a 3-2 win despite going down to 10 men. But even though it was a tense game that ultimately resulted in one of the co-hosts losing, there was still some mutual respect on display between the two sets of fans inside the Azteca.

Mexican fan gifts English supporter Merlin the duck plushie

During the tournament, fans were able to buy a Merlin the duck plush, which featured the Mexican jersey.

The toy became popular among the local fanbase, and one supporter has been captured giving away his plushie to a young English fan.

The video, which was taken during the recent Round of 16 tie at the Azteca, was shared by ESPN.com.mx on social media.

They captioned the video: “A MEMORY HE’LL CARRY FOREVER. Mexican fan gave a little fan his Merlin the duck plushie and his reaction is UNIQUE.

“THIS IS WAY MORE THAN FOOTBALL.”

Elsewhere, we have seen Mexico receive praise from England fans in the aftermath of their match, with several fans praising the people and their stadium shortly after they met.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are now set to continue their campaign later this week when they face Norway in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Win that match, and they will meet Argentina or Switzerland in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
