Reigning NFL MVP Matthew Stafford seems all set to retire from the league.
Los Angeles Rams superstar Matthew Stafford had a phenomenal run during the 2025-26 NFL season, clinching the first MVP award of his career.
However, let’s not forget that Stafford is already 38 years old. While he led the league with 4,707 passing yards and 46 passing touchdowns last season, Stafford’s wife has hinted at the Rams star’s retirement plans.
Kelly Stafford says Matthew Stafford is considering retirement
Stafford’s wife made an appearance on The Cutting Edge podcast, where she gave two major reasons why the Rams star may not continue his career beyond the upcoming NFL season.
“One of the biggest things Matthew can’t stand is that he can’t come to [his kids’] weekend games.
“That’s starting to wear and tear on him, that he’s not around for those. And they’re getting to the age… And they’re asking, ‘Well, when is dad gonna come to our games?'” Kelly said.
She added, “With the injury stuff, too, Matthew has had his fair share. And now the lingering ones, as he gets older in this league. Every year, I always worry about his head.
“That’s the one injury that diagnosing it is tough; knowing the repercussions of it is tough.”
The head injury that Kelly is most worried about is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, a.k.a. CTE, which is very common among NFL players.
Why? Well, CTE is caused by repeated trauma to the head, and the physicality of the NFL has claimed many victims. What’s worse is that CTE cannot be diagnosed before death.
