Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has had his say on transfer interest from Liverpool during the summer transfer window.

During the summer, Arne Slot’s Liverpool were keen on bringing in a new midfielder this summer and were keen on Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who had an affordable release clause in his contract at San Sebastian.

Arsenal failed to get a deal done for Zubimendi as the Spaniard did not agree on personal terms with the Gunners and the North London club believing that he preferred a move to Real Madrid or Barcelona.

However, HITC reported that Liverpool had received encouragement that a deal for Zubimendi was possible for around £51 million, a deal that the Reds were happy to pay.

Martin Zubimendi explains Liverpool rejection

Despite Slot’s Liverpool being encouraged that a deal was possible, HITC also reported that Zubimendi had decided to reject Liverpool’s advances.

The 25-year-old midfielder and his representatives held extensive talk with Liverpool, led by sporting director Richard Hughes – who worked hard on the move but Zubimendi decided to remain at San Sebastian.

Wednesday’s edition of Marca have published a lengthy interview with the midfielder. The majority of the interview focuses on Spain’s successor at the Euros and their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures against Serbia and Switzerland.

As well as discussing La Roja’s trophy success, Marca also asked Zubimendi about the reports linking him with move away from Sociedad.

“No, no, my friends are clear that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure whatsoever,” he said.

When asked what the Spanish club means to him, Zubimendi explained: “Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life.”

Liverpool have Martin Zubimendi replacement available to them

Whilst missing out on Zubimendi was a big blow for Liverpool and caused concern for fans of the Reds, it is certainly not the be-all and end-all.

The start to the new Premier League season has been perfect with Slot’s side winning three Premier League games out of three including a comfortable 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Ryan Gravenberch was exceptional and could be the Zubimendi alternative the Reds need. The Dutchman was on a different level throughout the game at Old Trafford and could be vital for the club this season.
