Serie A has been a fine home for English players of late but Tammy Abraham’s time with Roma may be coming to an end this summer.
Italian football may not be the powerhouse that it was in the 90’s and early 2000’s but it has become attractive to English players in recent times.
Chris Smalling decided to relaunch his career in Italy, joining Roma from Manchester United in 2019.
Fikayo Tomori and Ruben Loftus-Cheek departed Chelsea for AC Milan and fellow ex-Blues talent Tammy Abraham joined forces with Smalling in Rome.
England caps haven’t exactly been forthcoming for the quartet but they have carved out strong careers in Italy after saying goodbye to the Premier League.
Yet just as Newcastle United and West Ham United chase Tomori, Abraham could follow him in leaving Italy this summer…

Daniele De Rossi on Tammy Abraham future
Abraham moved to Roma in 2021, joining forces with Jose Mourinho in the Eternal City for £34million.
The giant striker smashed 27 goals in his first season but suffered a real dip in the 2022-23 campaign, scoring just nine goals before suffering a torn ACL on the final day of the season.
Abraham returned to action in April and managed one goal in 12 appearances before the season ended.
HITC reported in May that Abraham is open to a Premier League return with West Ham United, Newcastle United, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Leicester City all keen.
There is still Premier League interest and Abraham may well be let go by Roma this summer.
The Serie A side are closing in on signing Girona striker Artem Dovbyk and that could pave the way for Abraham to be moved on.
Roma boss Daniele De Rossi has been quoted by Roma Press as saying that Abraham is an ‘important player’ and there could be a market for his signature as a result.
De Rossi accepts that he has not seen the ‘real Tammy’ since becoming Roma boss as he battles back from a huge injury.
The Italian notes that some players want more playing time and will ultimately have to move, leaving the door open for Abraham to go.
“Abraham and Bove’s future? Tammy is a strong player, an important player, he could have a lot of market because he is an important player and has recovered. I’ve seen him the last 6 months and he comes from a very big injury,” said De Rossi.
“I know what we’ve seen is not the real Tammy and we want to focus on strong players, the same goes for Bove. I evaluate, I watch them in training, I talk to the director and we look at the opportunities that the market and the demand of the players can give us, because they often want more space, they complain, I understand it and I have to accept it,” he added.
Abraham may need a move
It’s not even two years since Arsenal were being linked with a £100million move for Abraham – but that seems like a long, long time ago now.
Arteta was even left ‘upset’ after Arsenal failed to sign Abraham from Chelsea in 2021, so there was long-term interest from the Gunners.
Abraham had a dip in form and then a layoff of nearly a year though, so it’s understandable that his suitors – and his price tag – aren’t quite at the same level now.
Premier League clubs are bound to have an interest though and Abraham may well fancy heading back to England in order to get his career back on track.
