Loris Karius would ‘very much like’ to move to Italy when his contract at Newcastle United expires this summer. The goalkeeper’s agent has also offered his free transfer to AC Milan.
That is according to CalcioMercatoWeb, which reports that Karius would look fondly on an adventure in Serie A next season. He would appreciate a chance to move to Italy and to be closer to his partner, Diletta Leotta. The Italian presenter fronts DAZN’s Scudetto coverage.
Karius has flown to Milan to spend time with Leotta since joining Newcastle. The Daily Mail noted they met up six days before he started for the Toon in their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United. Now, he is open to moving to Italy with AC Milan a possible option.
Karius’ agent offers AC Milan the Newcastle goalkeeper’s free transfer
An agent working for Karius has offered AC Milan sporting director Frederic Massara a free transfer for the Newcastle goalkeeper. He is out of contract at St James’ Park come June 30 after agreeing to new terms in January. The Toon extended his deal as cover for Nick Pope.
Karius was due to be a free agent in the winter market after joining Newcastle on a short-term contract in September. Eddie Howe brought the 29-year-old to Tyneside after Martin Dubravka joined Manchester United on loan. The pair now both act as Pope’s understudy.
Howe has rarely utilised Karius, however, with the Carabao Cup final the shot-stoper’s sole outing for Newcastle so far. He has also not named the former Liverpool man on the bench for a Premier League match since October. Karius has been an unused substitute for seven.
Inter Milan could fight their San Siro rivals for the German’s signature
Reports by CalcioMercatoWeb also noted that an agent approached AC Milan to discuss a transfer from Newcastle for Karius in January. But the goalkeeper ultimately extended his contract at St James’ until the summer. Now, he could move to San Siro with Inter Milan.
That is because FC Inter News reports that Inter Milan are considering the free transfer of Karius to replace Samir Handanovic as Andre Onana’s understudy. Yet AC Milan are now giving thought to the German Jurgen Klopp called ‘fantastic’ during his time with Liverpool.
AC Milan no longer feel Ciprian Tatarusanu or Antonio Mirante are suitable cover for Mike Maignan. Rossoneri leaders also question if Devis Vasquez is ready now to move up from their Primavera side. So, San Siro chiefs are not ruling out targeting a more proven backup.
The Serie A side could even sign two goalkeepers with Marco Sportiello set to join in a free transfer from Atalanta. So, Massara is considering also signing Karius in a Bosman transfer after an agent offered the Newcastle star to AC Milan with his contract due to end in June.
But it is unclear if Karius’ representative has also approached other Serie A teams to sound out interest in the German. His desire to potentially move to Italy for personal reasons has increased the chances of the former U21 international adding a new country to his record.
