Federico Chiesa has been confirmed as Liverpool’s latest addition.
The Anfield faithful probably thought that their club was going to go the whole summer transfer window without signing anyone.
When Martin Zubimendi rejected Liverpool, they would have certainly felt that way, with the midfielder’s decison to stay in Spain proving to be a body blow to the team.
But Arne Slot hasn’t allowed that to affect his start to life as the new manager because he has picked up two wins from two.
Since then, Liverpool have signed goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, before loaning him back ahead of his return next summer.
And then, on Thursday, in one of the deals of the summer, Liverpool secured the £12.5 million transfer of Chiesa, who can operate as a number ten, across the front three, but his preference would be to play far right.
Many Liverpool fans are delighted with this deal, but more so because they have brought in someone of such a high calibre for a small fee.
But Ryan Lowe, who recently left his managerial role at Preston, admitted that Chiesa isn’t the one he would have signed.
The boyhood Liverpool fan stated that Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon would have been the one he would have signed, as he told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (28/08/24 at 7:15 pm).
Gordon has been linked with Liverpool this summer, with the former Everton player scoring 12 goals in all competitions for the Magpies last season.
Whilst Gordon is on the rise, a player like Chiesa is probably more needed because he can play on Mohamed Salah’s side and Slot doesn’t have much cover for the Egyptian king.
Liverpool should have signed Anthony Gordon
“He is definitely going to be a back-up to that front three because they are all quality players, where does he fit in,” questioned Lowe about Chiesa. “One thing I have noticed with Liverpool, their fullbacks last season, they both bombed on and you had two centre-halves.
“Now, they are building with a back three. So, whatever side he is on, if they are going to leave him high and wide or give him the ball to get him up the pitch, it will be very interesting.
“If you are asking me, I would have gone out and paid the money for Anthony Gordon. I know the Newcastle fans won’t like that. But the fact of the matter is, he is one coming in and being a starter – £12 million is nothing (for Chiesa). I know they have to give him some money. If he can stay fit and prove his fitness, then he will prove his worth. He is definitely an addition to the squad. Liverpool don’t need squad players. They need starters.”

Anthony Gordon’s future
Even though Newcastle have the richest owners in the league, they can’t splash the cash as much as they would have liked.
It has also raised doubts about the future of their most important players, with Gordon being front and centre of that talk this summer.

With Luis Diaz being linked away from Liverpool, you wonder, in the near future, if that door could open for Gordon.
