A key transfer deal for Liverpool could provide a big boost for Arsenal in their race for midfield additions this summer.

Arsenal confirmed the signing of Riccardo Calafiori last month with the Italian defender moving to potentially play at left-back for the upcoming Premier League season.

Mikel Arteta’s side also wants a midfielder this summer and the outcome of a key deal for Liverpool could sway things in Arsenal’s favour.

HITC has reported that Liverpool have been snubbed by Martin Zubimendi with the Real Sociedad midfielder opting to stay at San Sebastian this summer.

HITC has reported that Arsenal are keen on Mikel Merino after the Gunners attempted to sign Zubimendi before moving on to different targets.

We have also reported that Mikel Arteta wants a deal done for Merino before the Premier League starts so this week will be a key one if the former Newcastle United midfielder is to complete a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal fans were perhaps beginning to get more and more frustrated as the days have gone on with no developments as of yet for the midfielder.

However, with Zubimendi remaining at San Sebastian this summer, this could accelerate a deal for Merino.

We had reported that Zubimendi’s potential departure to Liverpool would have no impact on Arsenal’s chase of Merino but the deal for the 25-year-old collapsing will surely help the Gunners.

Arsenal certainly need midfield cover this summer with Thomas Partey struggling for fitness and Merino is a player Arteta is thought to like.

With just days to go before Manchester United kick-off the Premier League season, Arsenal will be hoping to seal a deal for the Spaniard sooner rather than later.
