Arsenal are wasting no time in the summer transfer window as they gear up for another Premier League title charge.

The Gunners have narrowly missed out on league glory in the last two seasons but with new additions to their squad this summer they will hope that their third attempt for the title brings more success.

One area that Arsenal could look to strengthen is in midfield, and they have shown an interest in former Newcastle United midfielder Mikel Merino.

HITC sources have confirmed that Real Sociedad believe that Merino is ready to leave the club this summer.

It is understood that Merino’s representatives are in talks about his future with Sociedad but also other clubs including Arsenal and Barcelona.

HITC can reveal that both Arsenal and Barcelona have spoken with his representatives in recent weeks – but they are not alone with Aston Villa and Bayer Leverkusen also showing an interest.

The 28-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and HITC has been told that Sociedad are pushing Merino to make a decision on whether he is staying or going this summer.

Merino has been offered a new contract by Sociedad but he is considering his options – including a return to the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta approves Arsenal move for Mikel Merino

Arsenal are eager to strengthen their midfield and they view Merino as a plausible option this summer.

However, sources insist that they are yet to table an offer for the Spaniard and are unlikely to until he makes a firm decision on his future.

If Merino chooses to leave this summer, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has already approved him as a potential signing this summer.

Arteta has contacted Merino about a potential move this summer and is a big admirer of the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Merino now faces a crucial crossroads – either sign a new deal with Sociedad or leave this summer.

Merino has impressed at this summer’s Euro 2024 where he has appeared in every match for Spain on their route to the final.

He has previously been hailed by Kieran Tierney as a “world-class” player after the former Arsenal player joined Real Sociedad and became his teammate.
