Tottenham are now said to be close to striking an agreement for a “controversial” sponsorship “like we see at Arsenal” – according to eNCA.

What’s the story?

Well, it was eNCA’s UK correspondent Olly Barratt who shared details about Tottenham’s latest movements, as an agreement with South Africa (SA) Tourism is now close.

Speaking live on eNCA earlier today about the ties between Spurs and SA Tourism, he said: “There is also an acceptance among those close to the deal that this is going to be controversial in South Africa.

“We think it would probably involve something like we see at Arsenal with the Rwanda deal, the sponsorship being on the shirts. I’m told it’s very close to being agreed and announced now.”

In terms of providing some social commentary, citizens in South Africa are unhappy about how the nation’s resources are being spent.

As detailed by Martyn Ziegler of The Times, the three-year sponsorship agreement is worth £42.5m to the north Londoners, although it has been met with fierce backlash in South Africa.

Nevertheless, it seems the deal will still go through despite widespread unhappiness, with an official announcement imminent as Barratt states.

Tottenham cannot be blamed

While many – like Barratt – are describing this deal as a “controversial” agreement, that cannot be put on Tottenham.

As Ziegler reveals, this sponsorship agreement would be 33% of South Africa’s entire budget, which in truth is a poor use of the funds.

Nevertheless, Spurs have no reason to ignore the money on offer, and it should hopefully help to make the north Londoners more competitive up against their free-spending rivals in the Premier League.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Tottenham are expected to announce the deal shortly, before wearing SA Tourism branding on their shirts and potentially training gear.
