According to numerous reports in recent months, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Signing Lukaku would be a huge signal of intent from Tottenham. It would be a blockbuster signing and given that he cost £97.5m last summer, it could also be a club-record deal.

A move to Spurs may well appeal to the Belgian. After all, he played his best football at Inter under Antonio Conte, stating at one point that he ‘would die’ for the former Inter boss.

Lukaku would relish the chance to work alongside Conte once again, and we’re sure that Conte would be over the moon if he was able to land Lukaku.

Not only would he be signing an effective striker if he brought Lukaku to north London, it would also be the ultimate sign of faith from Danie Levy.

For quite some time, we’ve heard about how Conte wants assurances that he’ll be backed at Spurs, and, in our view, there would be no greater sign of trust than signing Lukaku.

Think about it, Lukaku is the absolute opposite of the type of player Levy would sign under any other manager.

He’s been in poor form for the past 12 months, he’d be incredibly expensive, and, of course, Tottenham don’t really need another number nine as Harry Kane remains one of the club’s most important players.

In any other era, we’d have laughed off rumours linking a player like Lukaku to Spurs, but now, with Conte at the helm, we can imagine that he’s a genuine target that has been spoken about.

Whether or not Levy will back Conte with this signing remains to be seen, but if he does, there can be no question about how much faith the chairman has in his manager.
