LeBron James’ whiteboard of options seems to have come down to three final contenders whom the 41-year-old considers as realistic destinations for his 24th NBA season.

Even at 41 years old, LeBron can make NBA free agency grind to a halt by simply making himself available.

While James is not expected to make his decision anytime soon, it seems only three of the 10 teams that his agent Rich Paul considered as options for James are still in the running.

LeBron James is choosing between two familiar homes and one new challenge

ESPN’s Shams Charania shared an update based on conversations with his front office sources that former LeBron teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat are considered frontrunners, alongside the Philadelphia 76ers.

“When I talk to other teams, they look at Cleveland a lot, Miami, and Philadelphia. Those are the 3 teams that others view as strong here.”

Charania also added the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves as two extra teams on a potential five-team shortlist.

“Every team that’s in it still believes they have a chance and is still engaged with Rich Paul on a daily, hourly basis. Figuring out what it would look like, what the vision is. CLE, MIA, GSW, MIN, PHI, these are the 5 most teams that I’ve been hearing.”

LeBron James’ decision will make one of these teams a contender

The 76ers and Cavaliers will be considered in the running to win the East without LeBron, while the Heat are expected to be among the major contenders in their first season with Giannis Antetokounmpo.

LeBron has a clear role in the starting five in both Cleveland and Philadelphia, while Miami has a rougher roster after the Antetokounmpo trade.

His two former NBA teams will have fanbases that will love him regardless, but the pressure of joining the 76ers with a one-year window to win a title might take the enjoyment out of what might be his final year.

The Cavs seem like the best destination, all things considered. It brings comfort, continuity, and contention to LeBron’s plate in front of a fanbase that already pedestalizes him.

The Timberwolves might be the best win-now destination, and the Warriors might make him the happiest, but it seems everyone is still trailing behind the Cavs in terms of being an attractive destination.
