Embolo was awarded a second yellow card of the game after an intervention from the VAR, as the Swiss forward’s journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has potentially come to an end.

For years, soccer faced a problem of players getting away with dives without receiving punishment, until the introduction of VAR re-checks.
Keeping that in mind, former NFL star Robert Griffin III wants the NBA and NFL to learn from FIFA’s handling of Embolo in the Argentina vs. Switzerland game.
“FIFA just used VAR to replay a player flopping and gave him a yellow card. NBA and NFL need to implement this ASAP,” Griffin III made the suggestion on X.
For what it’s worth, the NBA already has a variation of the VAR where blatant flopping results in penalties on the court. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the NFL, as the league has no VAR-esque technology at its disposal.
Both the NBA and the NFL could learn a thing or two from FIFA in providing fans a better experience while simultaneously penalizing flopping by players.
