LeBron James was heavily pondering retiring from basketball at the end of the 2025-26 season, but one major accomplishment changed his mind.
James is entering a record-shattering 24th season next year with the Philadelphia 76ers. The previous record for most seasons played was 22, so James set the new record last season.
As the 41-year-old wrapped up his 23rd season with the Lakers, the legend almost chose to retire instead of coming back in 2026-27.
Why did LeBron James choose not to retire after last season?
LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, revealed on the ‘Game Over’ podcast that LeBron might have retired last season if the Lakers had lost to the Houston Rockets in the first round of the 2026 Playoffs.
“That series, in my opinion, convinced him to keep playing. I truly believe that. I think if they somehow got swept or lost 4-1 in that series, it could be different. I think that gave us another ride.”
James averaged 23.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in the first round of the 2026 Playoffs, leading the Lakers to a 4-2 series win despite being without Luka Doncic for the entire series and Austin Reaves for the first four games.
After being forced to accept a third-option role behind Doncic and Reaves last season, James thrived as the No. 1 option once again in the postseason.
While James chose not to retire and join the 76ers, it’s unlikely his new team will ask him to be the No. 1 option in their quest for a championship.
The 76ers have Jaylen Brown and Tyrese Maxey as high-usage scorers to carry the load, while Joel Embiid will focus more on ensuring he stays healthy when the team needs him most.
Thankfully, James turning back the clock as a No. 1 option has allowed his illustrious career to continue. Now, he will be hoping to play an integral role in leading the 76ers to a championship and securing the fifth championship ring of his career.
