Tony Cascarino has claimed that Tottenham have needed a goalscoring midfielder in their team for a ‘very long time’, as he questioned Harry Winks’ future at the club.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur are the two men deployed in the middle of the park by Antonio Conte, with Oliver Skipp as a back-up and then Winks coming in next.
During these last few years, Winks has gone from being an England international to struggling to get off the bench for Spurs – and that under various managers.
Conte is known for bringing the absolute best out of his players, but so far, it doesn’t look like it’s happening with Winks, with Everton being interested parties in the 26-year-old.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if Winks is sold this summer, with rumours also circulating that Christian Eriksen could make a return to north London, now he is someone who would solve their goalscoring issues from the middle of the pitch.
Nonetheless, this is what former Republic of Ireland international Cascarino had to say about Tottenham’s midfield issues and the future of Winks, as he told talkSPORT.
“I think they are well set-up to get some goalscoring midfielder,” said Cascarino.
“I think a goalscoring midfielder is something Spurs have needed for a very long time.
“Whether Winks stays at the football club or not? I don’t know. Bentancur has come in, but he’s not a goalscorer. I certainly wouldn’t class Hojbjerg as a goalscorer.
“So, I think they lack something in that area, which they can find. They lost Dele Alli. It didn’t end up working out for him at Spurs.”

ERIKSEN WOULD BE PERFECT FOR TOTTENHAM
Daniel Levy isn’t known to splash the cash in a crazy fashion, so bringing in a player on a free-transfer would be something that would suit him.
Spurs have already done that by bringing winger, Ivan Perisic, to the club from Inter Milan, with Luka Modric backing his former side with that transfer.
But Eriksen returning to north London, after he helped Brentford secure safety this season, would be perfect for Conte and exactly what he needs in the middle of the park.
The Denmark international wouldn’t need to get settled in like Perisic and he would complement what the Champions League side already have in midfield.
