Speculation is mounting that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a Chelsea player.

According to The Standard last weekend, Spurs are keen on signing Trevoh Chalobah before the summer transfer window closes.

Tottenham began the summer with two central defenders on their shopping list and as of now only Clement Lenglet – who joined on loan from Barcelona – has arrived in North London.

Chalobah could perhaps be deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge in the near future, with Chelsea having signed Kalidou Koulibaly and trying to bring Wesley Fofana to West London.

And Paul Brown of The Daily Star has told Give Me Sport that the 23-year-old – who stands at 6’3 – might well be tempted to sign for Antonio Conte’s outfit, due to Champions League participation.

He said: “Chalobah has a right to feel upset. He worked so hard to finally get a chance at Chelsea and he played in some big games last season without letting anyone down.

“He played well considering the manager doesn’t have a lot of faith in him and Chelsea have signed Koulibaly and now want another centre back, that has to be quite a kick in the teeth for him, so I’m sure he would be tempted to join another team playing in the Champions League.”

On the surface, it seems unlikely that Chelsea would voluntarily strengthen a Premier League rival in the form of Tottenham.

Then again, if the player makes it clear that he wants a transfer to Spurs then that complicates the Blues’ stance somewhat, it has to be said.

Problem is, Chalobah certainly wouldn’t be a first-team regular under Conte either.

So if it’s regular football he’s after, swerving Tottenham is just as logical a decision as wanting to leave Chelsea.
