A new era begins at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp’s exit and Arne Slot’s appointment.

The Dutchman is going to be straight at work because there is a lot he has to deal with at Liverpool.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) aren’t exactly known to splash the cash like their rivals, such as Chelsea and Manchester City.

So, it’s going to be interesting to see how much money Slot gets to spend in the transfer market because it’s needed to improve the team.

One area Liverpool have to fix is the centre-back department after the club collapsed last season, especially from a defensive aspect, and ended up handing the Premier League title to Manchester City.

Virgil van Dijk might be attracting interest from Saudi, but he is still the main man at the back, with Jarell Quansah showing serious promise and having a breakthrough campaign.

Ibrahima Konaté is one of the best on his day, but he spends more time in the treatment room, whilst it has been a while since Joe Gomez played regularly at centre-back.

That’s why there have been suggestions that Liverpool are keen on Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi, who is starring for England at Euro 2024.

Jeff Stelling says it must be ‘so frustrating’ for Crystal Palace fans that, not only might they lose him this summer, but also attacking duo Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise.

But Alan Pardew feels Steve Parish will remain strong and the London club, who finished in the Premier League’s top ten during the recent campaign, won’t end up losing all three, as he told talkSPORT (18/06/24 at 6:55 am).

Will Marc Guehi stay at Crystal Palace?

“It must be so frustrating if you are a Crystal Palace fan,” said Stelling. “You have a wonderful run at the end of the season and then all of sudden everybody is talking about buying your players.”

Pardew added: “I have been impressed with him (Guehi) all year. I don’t think that was an anomaly that one game (against Serbia). He has been terrific for Palace. He has this tremendous ability to read the pass, so he puts it out, the danger, before it gets anywhere near the goal. That’s his strength. He can get caught out, at times. But he has such phenomenal pace that he can recover. He is something our back four really needed in the centre. I am so pleased Gareth (Southgate) pitched with him.”

Stelling then asked “This is a big summer for Palace. You can’t afford to sell all three (Guehi, Eze and Olise). Can they?”

Pardew responded: “The problem you have at Palace and clubs you don’t consider top ten, but these guys are really phenomenal players – I don’t think Palace lose all three. I think Steve Parish will be strong.”

Liverpool in the summer transfer market

Yes, Liverpool were pushing for the Premier League title last season, but you sense it was the team overachieving more than anything else.

A lot of work still needs to be done on this team and that’s where the summer transfer market comes into play.

If the club get this one right, then it will be huge for the long-term future of Slot.

Michael Edwards has returned to the club. His reputation is pretty strong after what he did in his first spell at Anfield.

But you know, one dodgy window, and your reputation can be in tatters, in next to no time.
