Chelsea are living proof that splashing the cash doesn’t always result in success.
Since the turn of the century, Chelsea fans have been used to trophy dominance under the stewardship of Roman Abramovich.
Yes, money was spent back then, but they are now proving that there has to be a method to the madness and some brains behind the whole operation.
A few years into Todd Boehly and his people standing at the top of Stamford Bridge, it has seen them fall out of Europe altogether, fail to win a trophy, go through more managers than their rivals combined and all whilst spending over £1bn.
In years to come, Chelsea supporters can probably laugh at some of their signings because many have been beyond disastrous.
Take your pick as to which one is top of the tree, as Jason Cundy is in no doubt about one signing that was just ’terrible’ for all.
Kalidou Koulibaly joined for £33 million in 2022 from Napoli and he arrived as an experienced centre-half.
But as Cundy pointed out, it was a ‘terrible acquisition’ and it was a simple case of the ‘wrong player’ being signed at the ‘wrong time’, as he told talkSPORT (09/06/24 at 3:40 pm).
To no one’s surprise, Koulibaly didn’t last long and he was eventually sold 12 months later where he is now playing for Saudi Arabia Pro League side Al-Hilal.
Kalidou Koulibaly’s transfer to Chelsea
“There is no doubt that mistakes have been made,” said Cundy. “Koulibaly came in. That was a terrible acquisition.
“Wrong player at the wrong time because he may well have been a good player once, but we are getting him at the back end of his career. He was terrible.”

Are Chelsea on the right track?
Compared to the previous campaign, when Chelsea finished in the bottom half, they have improved and will be playing Conference League football next season.
But they shouldn’t have been anywhere near those levels and their current situation isn’t something to shout about, either.

If Mauricio Pochettino hadn’t left, then perhaps you could make the argument that they are on the right track and can look forward to making a return to the Champions League.
But you just have to question, if new manager Enzo Maresca starts poorly or doesn’t deliver a top-four finish, at least, then you have to question how long he will last.
