Newcastle United and Liverpool have been pretty quiet so far as the summer transfer window enters its final month.

The new Premier League season is around the corner and both clubs face very different scenarios, with one in Europe and the other preparing for empty midweeks.

Liverpool have a new manager in the dugout, with fans hoping Arne Slot can challenge for the title once more and Newcastle United, at a minimum, hoping they return to Europe.

For that to happen, they need to get business right in the summer transfer market, but so far, things aren’t going like fans would like.

Earlier on in the window, fans were surprised when Anthony Gordon was linked with a transfer to Liverpool, but things have gone quiet now.

But the surprising transfer rumours keep rolling in from St James’ Park, with question marks over the future of Kieran Trippier.

This was discussed by Dean Saunders and Jamie O’Hara, with the latter questioning if Trippier is ‘past his best’.

The 33-year-old recently helped England reach the final of Euro 2024, mainly playing as a left-back because of injury issues elsewhere.

But amid suggestions that Trippier could leave this summer, Saunders stated that he wouldn’t even start for Liverpool ahead of Trent Alexander-Arnold, as he told talkSPORT (23/07/24 at 8:40 am).

Despite that, both pundits think the experienced fullback is still a ‘top’ player in the Premier League.

Would Kieran Trippier start for Liverpool?

“The big news coming in is that Newcastle are willing to sell England defender Kieran Trippier this summer,” said O’Hara.

“Trippier, would you say he is past his best,” questioned O’Hara amid transfer interest to which Saunders responded: “This baffles me. Would Trippier get into Liverpool’s team? (O’Hara answers no). So, how is he playing for England instead of Trent? Trent, for me, is a better right-wing-back than Trippier. I don’t think Trippier would get into Liverpool’s team.”

O’Hara then asked: “Is Trippier still a top player?” Saunders responded: “He is a top player, but he makes mistakes as well. He’s a good lad. Good for the dressing room. He’s a top Premier League player.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future at Liverpool

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Reds fans are worried at the prospect of losing Alexander-Arnold – he has 12 months remaining on his contract.

But Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid transfer rumours won’t go away, with Slot having to do everything in his power to keep him on board.

The only issue is that he isn’t the only one tipped to possibly leave, with Virgil van Dijk making a decision on his Liverpool future. – The Dutchman also has 12 months left on his contract.

Then there are those Mohamed Salah and Saudi transfer interest – and he too has 12 months left on his contract, as the club haven’t managed their players well, in that regard.
