Jack Wilshere believes that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe would be the perfect manager for the role of England manager.

England reached the Euro 2024 semi final but Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions side lost to Spain in Berlin thanks to a late goal from Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal.

Southgate confirmed his intention to step down as England manager earlier this week and the Football Association will now be looking at potential replacements for the former Middlesbrough boss.

Sources have told HITC that Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe is a top target to become the new England manager with the former Bournemouth manager understood to be open to taking over the role.

Wilshere believes that Howe would be perfect for England

Jack Wilshere will know better than most what Howe would offer to the England national team as the former Arsenal midfielder spent the 2016/17 campaign at Bournemouth.

“Eddie is very good tactically and I don’t think he gets a lot of credit for that,” Wilshere told talkSPORT.

“When I first went to Bournemouth the first thing I noticed was a notable change in the intensity every day.

“You hear about sports science coming into the game and managing things, well Eddie Howe has a great way of demanding from players and getting the best out of them every day.

“Obviously he wouldn’t see them every day at international level so that would be different, but tactically he’s good enough.

“As a man manager and someone who can get the best out of players, he’s a good person to have. He was a manager I’d run through a brick wall for.”

England’s big managerial decision

HITC has also reported that under-21 coach Lee Carlsley is also a target for England but Howe looks to be the first choice.

Former United right-back Gary Neville believes Eddie Howe is one of the ‘obvious’ candidates for the role as national team manager.

Howe leaving the Magpies may well be a bad decision with Newcastle appointing Paul Mitchell as a replacement for Dan Ashworth as they hope to build on last season with Howe as the fulcrum of this rebuild.

The Newcastle boss will have a big decision to make.
