Newcastle United fans have probably seen it coming a long way, but Eddie Howe is now being tipped for the England manager’s job.

Dubbed the ‘impossible job’ over the years, the hurt and wait still lingers on for English fans after another tournament of regrets and disappointment.

England were beaten by Spain in the final of Euro 2024, and in truth, there can’t be many complaints about the result because it was deserved.

Not long after, Gareth Southgate has confirmed that he has stepped down as England manager, which opens the door for the next man to try and end decades of pain.

Sources have told HITC Eddie Howe’s latest stance on the England job, with Newcastle braced for interest from the FA.

The Magpies finished seventh last term, but they were ravaged with injuries and he did guide the club to the Champions League in his first full season in charge.

You sense, when the Toon Army look at the overall picture, they very much like Howe and they would probably prefer him to stay at St James’ Park.

But you just wonder how the 46-year-old would react if the FA came knocking, with the out-of-work Graham Potter, another English coach, also mentioned and spoken about.

Neville has been there with England at major tournaments as a player and a coach. He was adamant that the next boss has to be English, as he told Sky Sports.

The name of Howe was discussed, with Neville sharing his thoughts on that possibility and how the FA has built for such a moment.

Eddie Howe to replace Gareth Southgate at England?

“Yes, they will have to (the next England manager needs to win a trophy) to surpass what Gareth (Southgate) has achieved,” said Neville.

“Over the years, we have had every different type of manager. The fashionable international manager and the best English managers. We have had Gareth (Southgate) who has been through the ranks with the younger teams.

“Where England go next? I don’t know. There are some obvious contenders. I think Graham Potter will get mentioned. Eddie Howe will get mentioned. I think it definitely will be an English manager. You think about St George’s Park and the move there a few years ago. It was to promote, encourage and develop English coaching. I do believe the FA will think properly about that, and the fact that to appoint an international would be wrong. We need to develop English coaches. It’s difficult for English coaches to get jobs at top Premier League clubs.”

Eddie Howe has the tools to become England’s next manager

One of the verbal hits Southgate would take during his time as England manager is the fact that the team played a very bland style of football.

From Anthony Gordon to Jarrod Bowen. These two hit double figures in goals last season on the domestic stage, but they were hardly used in Germany.

That just proves the attacking depth England have at their disposal and you feel Howe has the tools to get the best out of them all.

Howe has proven during his time at Newcastle, and during his days at Bournemouth, he plays the pretty football and wants his team to press high and play on the front foot.

It’s what the England fans are calling out for and they might just get their wish now Southgate has gone.
