Danny Murphy has given his take on talkSPORT (10:56am, July 12, 2021) on Aston Villa star Jack Grealish’s post on Twitter.

Grealish has made it clear on Twitter that he wanted to take a penalty during England’s defeat to Italy in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium in London last night.

Bukayo Saka took what proved to be the decisive penalty in the shootout and could not convert it.

After the match, former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane criticised Grealish for not stepping up to take a penalty during the shootout.

The 25-year-old Villa star has hit back at Keane’s comments, making it clear on Twitter that he wanted to take a penalty.

Former Liverpool and England international midfielder Murphy has given his take on Grealish’s comments.

Murphy said on talkSPORT (10:56am, July 12, 2021): “I knew he would. I absolutely had no doubt. I said this to someone this morning. I had no doubt that Jack Grealish would put his hand up. That didn’t cross my mind.”

Interesting decision

It is quite interesting that England head coach Gareth Southgate did not want Grealish to take a penalty.

The 25-year-old was confident enough to take one, and perhaps he should have been given the nod ahead of Saka.

Maybe Southgate did not think that Grealish would be able to score from 12 yards.

Perhaps the Villa star did not convince Southgate enough during penalty practices in training.

It is really good of Grealish to defend himself against criticism that he did not want to take a penalty.

Social media gives players like Grealish the chance to set records straight.

And he has just done that.
