Luis Garcia has said on Twitter that Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson should have taken a penalty for England instead of Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka.

The former Liverpool star has questioned England head coach Gareth Southgate’s decision to take off Henderson in extra time against Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

Garcia believes that the 31-year-old should have taken a penalty during the shootout.

The final at Wembley Stadium in London last night finished 1-1 after extra time.

Italy won the penalty shootout 3-2.

Saka, 19, saw his penalty saved by Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho had earlier failed to convert their spot kicks.

Henderson did not start the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

The 31-year-old – who has been on the books of Liverpool since the summer of 2011 when he joined from Sunderland for a transfer fee reported by The Guardian to be worth £20 million – came on as a substitute for Declan Rice in the 74th minute.

Southgate decided to take off Henderson on 120 minutes and brought on Rashford in his place.

Henderson is a leader and is much more mature than Saka, who is only 19.

However, the Liverpool star had failed to convert a penalty during England’s friendly match against Romania in the build-up to the European Championship.
