Michael Owen has lavished praise on Thiago Alcantara for Liverpool.

The Liverpool midfielder scored his first goal of the season in Wednesday’s Champions League win over Porto.

It was almost Steven Gerrard-esque as Thiago thumped a sweetly-struck half volley into the bottom right-hand corner from outside the box.

Here’s how Owen reacted:

He told BT Sport: “It’s virtually impossible to hit it like that. I’m telling you, there’s only one or two players on the pitch who could’ve scored that. He’s such a technician. It was just perfect, almost like a skimmer. Wow.”

Second goal

This was only the 30-year-old’s second goal since Michael Edwards brought him to Anfield from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020.

But honestly, he’d do well to score a better goal than that during his time at Liverpool – which, thankfully, will continue for a while yet.

There’s been speculation that Thiago [Bild] could head back to Barcelona in January, following Dani Alves in re-signing for the club under Xavi.

But Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on Wednesday that the player is completely focused on Liverpool.

And wantaway players just don’t score the sort of goals that Thiago did against Porto last night.

This is a midfielder who’ll be on Merseyside for a while yet.
