Gary Lineker has shared his distaste at the ending of the Formula One season on Twitter.

What’s the story?

Max Verstappen won the F1 World Championship yesterday in controversial circumstances, after effectively being allowed to compete in a one-lap race against Lewis Hamilton on the final lap.

With Liverpool and Manchester City already looking like front-runners in the Premier League this season, Lineker was now keen to explain the FIA’s ruling in footballing terms.

Now, of course – the Premier League would never invent such a scenario, and Liverpool and Manchester City don’t meet on the final day anyway.

But F1’s ruling yesterday has certainly sparked controversy in the footballing world.

Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Eric Dier are among those to take to social media after the race.

How did the Formula One season end?

The big issue came down to whether the race was restarted correctly on the final lap.

F1 gave permission to certain cars to overtake the safety car, but not the whole field.

With Verstappen on faster tyres than Hamilton, he was then able to pass on the final lap, with the Mercedes driver left powerless to resist.

Secretly the Premier League may well be hoping for such an exciting finish to their season – although surely without the controversy.

Liverpool and City are currently fighting it out with Chelsea to win the title.

It is a long time since three sides have looked like genuine contenders to win the league and it does have a look of a title race that could come right down to the wire.
