Max Verstappen claimed the Formula 1 world championship after an incredible and historic race in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver pipped Lewis Hamilton in the final lap of the race to win his first-ever F1 championship in one of the sporting events of the year in the United Arab Emirates capital.

Indeed, it was a moment in sport that will be remembered for many years to come, with the drama and controversy likely to be debated well beyond today’s incredible finale. And the commentators compared the race to Arsenal’s dramatic win against Liverpool in 1989.

The famous result at Anfield is one of the most historic in English football as Arsenal scored in the final seconds against Liverpool to win the old First Division title with a 2-0 scoreline. And the match got a reference on Sky Sports’ coverage of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

After all, the dramatic final lap had all the tension of a TV show ending, with Verstappen snatching victory from Hamilton in the literal dying seconds of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to secure his first-ever F1 championship.

Yet with the commentators referencing Arsenal’s famous win against Anfield over 30 years ago, fans on social media couldn’t help but revel at the moment.
