Rangers are believed to be keen on bringing Lyndon Dykes to Ibrox in January with Michael Beale hoping to bolster his attack.

It was Dean Jones – speaking to Give Me Sport – who made that bold claim, and if a deal does materialise this winter, Kris Boyd will surely have something to say about it.

What’s the story?

Well, the Scot – who made 211 appearances for Rangers, scoring 119 goals – commented on Dykes when the Bears were initially linked with him back in 2020.

At the time, Boyd doubted if the £8,000-a-week striker was good enough to score over 20 goals at Ibrox, and was far from sure if he would be an improvement on Alfredo Morelos.

The 39-year-old told the Sunday Post: “If Morelos stays, I understand Rangers being linked with strikers such as Lyle Taylor of Charlton and Livingston’s Lyndon Dykes, but I wonder if either is good enough to be lined up as a direct replacement for Morelos, with an expectation of scoring in excess of 20 goals a season.”

As things stand, Beale needs someone capable of scoring more than 20 goals.

Morelos has only found the back of the net four times this season, with Antonio Colak finding himself top of the scoring charts at Ibrox with 11 goals.

Over at Celtic, Ange Postecoglou has five attackers with five or more goals this season, so if Rangers aren’t able to spread their efforts out across the side, Beale needs a prolific talisman who will do most of the goalscoring himself.

Dykes has scored just six goals in 23 Championship appearances for QPR this term, so even though Boyd’s comments were made in 2020, perhaps he still carries the same opinion.

Dykes could motivate Morelos at Rangers

In our view, the mere presence of Dykes at Ibrox could force Morelos to up his game, in fear of being replaced entirely at Rangers.

Competition for places in football is very important, or else complacency can easily creep in, which is what we feel has happened to the Colombia international.

If Dykes does end up signing for Rangers, it could kill two birds with one stone for Beale in regards to getting Morelos back to his old goalscoring ways.
