Jan Vertonghen has suggested on Twitch that he wants to come back as a coach at Tottenham Hotspur.

Vertonghen to come back?

Vertonghen only left Spurs last year, after Jose Mourinho decided against extending his contract.

The central defender has since moved on to play for Benfica, but he is now thinking about his future plans.

At the age of 34, Vertonghen is edging closer to hanging up his boots.

And when asked whether he would be keen to come back to Tottenham, the Belgian international said:

“You never know. I still speak to former colleagues and I’m still active with people at the club,” he said.

“I had a great time there. Things are changing with the coach and some new people. But I think a call will always be there.

“I hope one day I can come back and see what is possible there.”

Pleasing comments

Vertonghen’s comments are likely to go down well with Tottenham fans.

He remains hugely popular with the North London club, and if he was to return as a coach it would surely be celebrated.

Tottenham have been keen to give their former players chances in their coaching team too.

The likes of Ledley King and Ryan Mason make up part of Antonio Conte’s backroom staff currently.

During his playing days Vertonghen spent eight years at Tottenham, making 315 appearances in total.
