How national newspapers covered the USMNT’s World Cup elimination

Pochettino hopes the USMNT inspired people to follow soccer during their spell in the World Cup.

The journey certainly increased the recognition of the sport across the USA, with Monday’s defeat making front page news on Tuesday morning.

New York Post used the headline: “US lose the battle of the Belg’.”

The Pittsburgh-Post Gazette went with the simple headline: “The party’s over”.

Defeat to the Belgians even made the front page of the Wall Street Journal, who said: “Belgium end US run for the World Cup”.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Morning News ran the headline: “Elation before elimination”.

Silicon Valley newspaper The Mercury News said: “America’s Cup dreams hit reality”.

Although the result was clearly a negative for the nation, seeing soccer make front page news across the country is a huge boost for the sport.
